The Golden Age of Radio W1

Happy Birthday ALAN REED, aka TEDDY BERGMAN,
aka Pasquale, aka Shrevie, aka Fred Flintstone
and so many more, plus THE PLANET MAN!

Who knew THE PLANET MAN would prove so
popular! Two - count'em - TWO! favorable
comments, so off we go! But there's only
time for one episode this morning so we
can get in more of ALAN REED.
#5 “Marston to Attack Earth” from 1953.

The rest of the show is devoted to the many
talents of Teddy Bergman, later known as Alan
Reed, born on August 20, 1907 in NYC. He was
a staple of radio on both coasts. He was one
of the Mighty Allen Art Players with Fred
Allen, the first Daddy for Fanny Brice's
BABY SNOOKS, a regular with Eddie Cantor,
Shrevie the cab driver (among other parts)
on THE SHADOW, GREAT PLAYS, DUFFY'S
TAVERN, Pasquale on LIFE WITH LUIGI,
LIFE OF RILEY, and dozens of other
radio roles, and of course the voice
of TV's Fred Flintstone.

Following PLANET MAN, we'll hear
excerpts of many comedy roles from one
episode of THE TEXACO STAR THEATER
of Jan 15, 1941, then an early appearance
of Falstaff Openshaw, the poet for so many
years on Fred Allen's show, and a parody
space opera “Face Patrol” #46 from the
November 1950 series of FALSTAFF'S
FABLES featuring his son Alan Reed Jr.

Reed often appeared in dialect roles.
According to his Wiki bio, he could act
in 22 dialects. On THE SHADOW #128 with
Orson Welles from July 10, 1938 “He Died
at Twelve” he plays the Italian criminal
Berati who is executed but returns for
vengeance.

On HENRY ALDRICH, Reed uses his natural
voice as a golfer who hires Henry to
caddy for him.

Finally, Reed appears as “Zerk” with
Humphrey Bogart in a war-time ship drama
on THE CAVALCADE OF AMERICA
#451 “My Son John” from Oct 29, 1945.
