The Golden Age of Radio W1

YUSA 268 May 18, 2013 Golden Age of Radio with Max Schmid
SUPERMAN, THE WHISPERER, HASHKNIFE HARTLEY, AND MR ALADDIN

We begin with “Is There Another Superman?” Chapters 3 and 4  from Jan 31 & Feb 01, 1946.
Batman and Superman interview witnesses to the bank robbery, with Robin along too. Superman is sure that HE is somehow robbing the banks!

Next, THE WHISPERER, #8 of the series from NBC on August 26, 1951.  The Syndicate tries to sell “insurance” to The Ace Trucking Company, but the owner refuses. Galt tries to help, but the owner refuses that too.

Next, a rare Mutual Network western series from 1950 of which only two episodes seem to survive, thanks to the Armed Forces Radio Service. We played the other one back on Program #97 back in March 2009. It's HASHKNIFE HARTLEY AND SLEEPY STEVENS, starring Frank Martin and Barton Yarborough. “The Double Cross” in which our heroes try to track down the Pinto Bandit.

Finally, a show that we played after Sunday night's show went into double-overtime, and the internet numbers (and money raised) trailed off – I guess everyone went to bed. I almost played it last week on YUSA, so why waste a good show – here it is again. Someone has been praising it in various OTR groups recently, and he's right, it's a good one. I have since found out that it was originally a west coast  summer replacement for BROADWAY IS MY BEAT. This was the last of the series, and the only example of the show that exists - MR ALADDIN starring Paul Frees, produced by Elliot Lewis, with
Sylvia Sims, Mary Jane Croft, Jack Krushen, Peter Leeds, and Junius Matthews. MR ALADDIN is asked to get rid of a woman's husband, who has been reincarnated as a dog. We're going to a séance!
It's “The Miracle of the Four Legged Husband” from Sept 09, 1951.

And a reminder, we are pre-empted from the WBAI schedule Sunday night – finally a paycheck and a day of rest!!

What could be more fun for a brand new bride then to spend her honeymoon in the desert looking for a ghost town? How about sticking her finger in a light socket. As it turns out that would have been a lot safer.
