The Golden Age of Radio

(This is the same show tht didn't air last week).

On this week's episode of THE GOLDEN AGE
OF RADIO we will hear four radio plays by
ERNEST KINOY who died on Nov 10 at the age
of 89.

BUCK ROGERS and THE AVENGERS have the week
off so that we may devote the entire show
to Kinoy, starting with one of his earliest
original scripts for THE RADIO CITY
PLAYHOUSE, an original story for DIMENSION
X, and his work on NBC crime shows for
Frank Sinatra on ROCKY FORTUNE and William
Gargan on BARRIE CRAIG, CONFIDENTIAL
INVESTIGATOR.

To modern audiences Kinoy may be better
remembered today for winning an Emmy
Award for writing the groundbreaking
TV series “Roots”, but to radio fans
he is best known as one of the main
adapters, along with George Lefferts,
of the NBC science fiction series
DIMENSION X and X MINUS ONE. After WWII,
in which he was a Nazi POW after his
division was captured in The Battle of
the Bulge, Kinoy became a house writer
for NBC.

We'll start with one of his earliest
original scripts, “Ground Floor Window”
which was first presented as the second
entry in the series RADIO CITY PLAYHOUSE,
then repeated by popular acclaim about a
year later. It's the moving story of the
love of paralyzed man for his new neighbor.
This is the second broadcast of the story
from Oct 23, 1949.

DIMENSION X #19 “The Castaways”
from August 11, 1950. Island natives
put a curse on the US military who are
using their island for atomic bomb
testing, then commit mass suicide by
drowning themselves in the sea!

Tough guy William Gargan starred as
BARRIE CRAIG, CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATOR,
a laid-back private eye who actually
liked the cops. This series ran for four
seasons on NBC from October 3, 1951 to
June 30, 1955. In this script by Ernest
Kinoy from Oct 24, 1951, Craig investigates
when his tailor George is caught up in
a protection racket.
With Santos Ortega and Don Pardo announcing.

In 1953, George Lefferts created a series
for down-on-his-luck Frank Sinatra called
ROCKY FORTUNE. Rocco Fortunato, also known
as Rocky Fortune, was a young man of several
talents constantly in need of employment
and who accepts odd jobs from the fictitious
Gridley Employment Agency (cribbed from
Wikipedia). These jobs usually led to murder.
Nov 24, 1953 #7 “Murder on the Aisle”.
Rocky is hired to keep a notorious theater
critic from getting too drunk to do his job.
So how does the guy get bumped off? With
Arnold Moss, Elaine Rost, Roger De Koven,
Staats Cotsworth, James Monks, and William Zuckert.
