The Golden Age of Radio

Gangsters take over THE GOLDEN AGE OF
RADIO this morning – Edward G Robinson
and Humphrey Bogart star in THE LUX
RADIO THEATER from 1939.

THE AVENGERS-1972 Springbok Radio
South Africa. “All Done By Mirrors”
Ch 1 & 2 of 7. How is Steed's security
network being breached?? Mrs Peel investigates.

Next, from 1939, two episodes of
THE SHADOW OF FU MANCHU
#147 “Fu Whips Fa Lo Swee” and
chooses a bride to provide him a son!
#148 “Fu Recaptures Nayland Smith”.

From the latest release from The Old
Time Radio Researchers we pull this
nice-sounding episode of THE LUX
RADIO THEATER (I wish the rehearsal
sounded as nice, because that's what
I wanted to play!) From Hollywood,
April 17, 1939, we will hear Edward
G Robinson, tossed of the force to
battle the mob undercover. The mob
consists of Humphrey Bogart and Otto
Kruger. Mary Astor is the dame. At the
tail end we will hear on of the
commercials from the rehearsal–they are a hoot!

Airtimes for The Golden Age of Radio

The Golden Age of Radio W1

Today, on her birthday, we salute another
great NYC radio actress - Lesley Woods, who
in 1946 was the gal-pal of three different
radio sleuths practically at the same time!

THE AVENGERS-1972 Springbok Radio
South Africa. “All Done By Mirrors”
Ch 3 & 4 of 7. Something is glittering in
the woods, and it leads to murder and a
strange lighthouse. Mrs Peel investigates
while Steed lays low.

Next, from 1939, two episodes of
THE SHADOW OF FU MANCHU
#149 “Death Dealing Flies” and other
creepy-crawlies menace Nayland Smith
and Dr Petrie as they search for Fu
and his minions who have vanished from
Fu's lair.
#150 “A Message from Fu's Submarine”
So THAT's where they went!

Leslie Woods starred in several soap
operas on radio and television, but
on her birthday today we remember her
as the “constant companion” to three
different radio detectives. We'll hear
an excerpt from THE SHADOW, where
she spent a season with Brett Morrison,
then her long-running role as Mary on
BOSTON BLACKIE with Richard Kollmar.
April 16, 1946 “The Baseball Player
Murder” featuring sportscaster Clem
McCarthy in a guest spot.

Finally, the role she may have left
THE SHADOW to play, reporter Ann
Williams, sidekick to
CASEY, CRIME PHOTGRAPHER
March 20, 1947 “The Demon Miner”. The
series had previously been known as
Just plain CRIME PHOTOGRAPHER, this
was the first to add the character's
name to the title.

It's interesting to note that Lesley
Woods and Jan Miner (TV's Madge
the Manicurist) seemed to share roles,
or at least switch back and forth on
BLACKIE and CASEY. Miner was the
first Mary on BB, but it seems that
Woods may have been the first Ann, to
be replaced by Miner shortly after the
show we will hear today.
