ADVENTURES BY MORSE “It’s Dismal to Die”
Chapter 2 The dummy (any relation to the village
half-wit from Dead Men Prowl??) has been feeding
the husband of the woman Captain Friday and Skip
Turner have traveled to Dismal Swamp to help.
And look out for the Nazi doctor!

Next, a really strange program starring Basil Rathbone
called TALES OF FATIMA. Only a handful of the 39 episodes
survive. Rathbone plays himself, the actor, and also an
amateur sleuth, guided by the voice of the girl on the
Fatima cigarette pack! From CBS, May 21, 1949, #20
of the series of 39, “A Much Expected Murder.”

For Halloween month, we have an episode of QUIET PLEASE,
written by Willis Cooper and starring Ernest Chappell.
From Dec 01, 1947 #26 “Come In, Eddie”. A neat trick,
since Eddie has been murdered by our protagonists,
including Les Tremayne as Jim Paxton.

We close it out with THE JACK BENNY SHOW – there’s a
Halloween party at Jack’s house, with lot’s of JELL-O
and a punch that Rochester is eager to fortify, over
Jack’s objections. Even Carmichael the bear is on hand!
From NBC, October 29, 1939.

The Golden Age of Radio W2

ADVENTURES BY MORSE Chapter 3
“It’s Dismal to Die” the final chapter
of the last story in the series.

From The Mummers in Detroit comes this cranky
horror host, The Old Hermit, with “Ghost stories,
weird stories, and murders, too!” From wartime,
it’s “Hansons’s Ghost”, about a wealthy man who
believes he can live on through the spirits of
others on THE HERMIT’S CAVE.

THE MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER tells the tale of an
expedition that discovers a lost wagon train
deep in a cave. Could there be survivors all
these years later?? This was a favorite story
of many when first heard in 1949, repeated by
request on Mutual on Nov 06, 1951.

With ebola in the headlines, we’ll turn the
clock back to the great plague with a story
by Anthony Vercoe. An old derelict breaks into
a house to seek food and shelter, but finds much
more in “Flies”, produced at Pacifica station KPFK
for THE BLACK MASS, originally broadcast on March
22, 1964. Erik Bauersfeld, did the adaptation, hosts,
and stars. I suggest you wear your facemask while listening!
