The Golden Days Of Radio

Franks salute to the Academy Awards

Amos n Andy - Andy Improves Himself - 1/9/55

Airtimes for The Golden Days Of Radio

The Golden Age of Radio

THE AVENGERS wrap up “Get-A-Way”
 with Chapters 5 & 6 from 1972
South Africa. Can Steed figure out
how the master criminals are turning
invisible before they finish their
mission to assassinate him?

We’ll hear a few of my favorite
episodes from the first 39 of
THE SHADOW OF FU MANCHU -
Ch 19 & 20 June 19 & 21, 1939.
Fu conducts an experiment in
fungology – poison puffballs are
killing the police force that have
come to apprehend him. We’ll meet
Karamaneh, Fu’s daughter – is she
trying to help Sir Nayland Smith
and Dr. Petrie? And watch out for
those mysterious Dacoits!

A few weeks after last week’s episode
of THE PHIL HARRIS/ALICE FAYE SHOW,
Phil decides to try to do more serious
drama on the show after the sponsor,
Mr Scott (Gale Gordon) fires the writers.
Phil will write his own script for
“Suspense”!  From NBC on April 22, 1951.

Three weeks later, on May 22, 1951, Phil
and Alice star on the real show SUSPENSE.
Producer/director Elliott Lewis (who played
Frankie Remley on their show) liked to cast
comedy stars to play against type when he
was at the helm. In this one, “Death on My
Hands” (May 10, 1951) Bandleader Phil is
involved in a girl’s death, and he may get
lynched before he can clear his name.
Alice is his former singer and girlfriend.
Also featuring Joseph Kearns, Herb
Butterfield, Barbara Whiting, Byron Kane,
Franklin Parker, and Gil Straton Jr.

Airtimes for The Golden Age of Radio

The Golden Age of Radio W1

THE AVENGERS unwrap the first two
chapters of “A Deadly Gift” from
1972 South Africa. The gift,
apparently, has to do with martial
arts ability, and Mrs Peel shows
she has plenty to spare.

Next an insanely great torture device
is unveiled on THE SHADOW OF FU
MANCHU. We’ll start with the final
episode of the first season, #39 from
Aug 04, 1939 “Six Gates of Joyful Wisdom”
aka “The Sword of Samurai.” Then we jump
ahead an entire 13-week program cycle
(which appears to no longer exist) to #80
“Sign of the White Peacock”. A lot has
happened in the interim since the end of
the previous story, and yet all the logs
declare that these are consecutive shows,
despite the numbering difference! Humbug!!
We’ll meet Fu’s (other?) daughter, because
at this point Karamaneh seems to be
married to Dr Petrie!

For laughs we have an episode of
CAN YOU TOP THIS, in which a
panel of jokesters try to beat the
laugh-meter score of listener-submitted
jokes. First subject: “Hats” on this
show from May 14, 1948. The panel is
made up of Ward Wilson (pinch-hitting
for Senator Ford), Harry Hershfield,
Joe Laurie Jr., Peter Donald, with
MC Dennis James.

And finally a show suggested by Ruben
“JO” Thomas, the world’s youngest
listener (retired) who is also the
world’s biggest fan of BARRIE CRAIG,
CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATOR. So here
it is – “Murder by Threes” from NBC
on Oct 01, 1952. It’s a cooking contest,
but one of the contestants winds up
murdered! Produced by Hyman Brown, it
stars William Gargan, with Barbara Weeks
and Don Pardo announcing.
