Happy Birthday RAYMOND BURR!

THE ADVENTURES OF HORATIO
HORNBLOWER, based on the novels of
C. S. Forester, stars Michael Redgrave.
Produced by Harry Alan Towers in 1952-53.
July 14, 1952 #2 “Horatio Captures the
Natividad”

JACK ARMSTRONG sure loves his
pedometer, and nobody should try to take
it from him! From Wednesday Jan 15, 1941
Chapter 08 of “The Zamboanga Adventure.”

For the rest of the show, we celebrate
RAYMOND BURR, born this day in history
May 21, 1917. We'll cram in three shows,
starting with a one-man tour-de-force from
THE CBS RADIO WORKSHOP. #76, from
July 14, 1957 “The Silent Witness”. Burr
performs alone, playing a prosecutor grill-
ing a mute witness who can only respond in
writing (and sound effects!).

Burr starred for a season in the adult western
FORT LARAMIE as Lee Quince, Captain of
Cavalry. Today, the next-to-last show of the
series #39 “Indian Scout” frrom Oct 21, 1956.
Charlie, a Crow Indian who likes to steal horses,
is found shot. With Lawrence Dobkin as Charlie,
Vic Perrin as Sgt Gorse, Jack Moyles as Major
Daggett, Harry Bartell as Lt Seiberts. Script
by Kathleen Hite.

SUSPENSE Raymond Burr has “The Paralta
Map”, which leads to The Lost Dutchman Mine,
and no one has ever found it or returned
alive! With Stacy Harris as Willis, Junius
Matthews as Lonnie. Produced and directed
by William N Robson. By Charles B Smith.
From CBS #689 March 10, 1957

Do we have GROUCHO?
YOU BET YOUR LIFE!!

THE ADVENTURES OF HORATIO HORNBLOWER,
based on the novels of C. S. Forester, stars
Michael Redgrave. Produced by Harry Alan Towers
in 1952-53. Today #03 (of current series!) from
Dec, 1952 “Shaky Alliance with El Supremo.”
(Real #20, according to Jerry's Logs, as opposed
to lunkheads who post erroneous files and info on
the web)!

JACK ARMSTRONG has a magic talking horse
to go along with his beloved pedometer, and he
finally catches up with the mysterious peddler
who stole the watch! From Thursday Jan 16 &
Friday Jan 17, 1941 Chapters 09 & 10 of
“The Zamboanga Adventure.”

GROUCHO MARX guest-starred on many radio
shows over the years, and briefly had his own
show called BLUE RIBBON TOWN in 1944. But he
really hit it big with the comedy quiz show
YOU BET YOUR LIFE starting in 1947.
It was a big hit on radio and television for
several years. What the audience didn't know
was that the shows were edited down to a half
hour from much longer recordings. About 20 of
these master shows have survived, ranging from
50 minutes to over an hour in length. We have
one today, recorded on Dec 16, 1953 for broad-
cast on Jan 27, 1954. The secret word is “money,”
and among the contestants are a herpetologist
and a roller derby dame. The audience is warned
at the top of the show not to yell out answers,
and you'll hear a question thrown out due to
audience interference. It's over 53 minutes
of unedited Groucho!

And in the remaining minutes we'll hear an
episode of Vic & Sade. Sade and Ruthie try
again to keep their shopping money straight,
to no avail. From April 1941 “Shopping Trip
with $5 Bank”

The Horn Speaker

Horn Speaker #461
1. CBS Radio Mystery Theater “I Must Kill Edna” 11-12-74
2.  Frankenstein Serial 1932 Episodes 4-6
3. Inner Sanctum Mysteries “Death is a Joker” 06-10-44
This cycle we start off with business as usual.  Then we continue with a 1932 serial version of Frankenstein.
One of the earliest programs on the radio was FRANKENSTEIN.  Authored by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (08/30/1797 – 02/01/1851), it was first produced for Australian radio starring George Edwards in 1931.  This thirteen episode broadcast was aired over the CBS network in 1932, a year after the Universal film release starring Boris Karloff.  It very closely follows the original book thus differing from the Hollywood film version.
George Edwards (born as Harold Parks, 11 March 1886 in Kent Town, South Australia; died 1953) was an Australian actor and producer.  Edwards was a pioneer of the radio serial in Australia. Prior to that he was a comedian, vaudeville artist, acrobatic dancer and stage performer. It is claimed that he changed his name from Harold Parks to George Edwards at the behest of Edward Branscombe, who was putting together an up-market act and did not want anyone associated with low-brow music hall, and that he took the name from English theatrical impresario George Edwards.[1] He performed in a radio drama adaption of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

DEVOTED TO MURDER: Episode 5 of “The Chronicles of Anthony Rathe.” When
is it an act of mercy, justifiable homicide or simply murder? A difficult
question at best, a moral dilemma to many. (NEW)

THE THREE GABLES: Once again Sherlock Holmes’ adversary is brilliant,
determined, ruthless and beautiful. His efforts to defeat the plans of
an aging beauty are at the heart of this classic story from the canon.
